The small town of Põlva is beautiful, and the Ahja river valley is well known for its rapids and cliffs. You can visit the Tuglas Museum, one of Estonia's most famous writers. Further on, in Piusa, a sand quarry offers a unique landscape in Estonia. The place was used for the extraction of sand for glass making. You can see the white, ochre or red sand dunes, depending on the place, and venture into the surrounding area for a walk in the forest. Behind the mines, next to the railway, there is a potter's workshop where you can buy handmade pottery.
