Located 60 km from Chiang Rai and 35 km from Mae Sai, this town is on the bangs of tourism: travellers hardly need to stay here, as most of them stay in Chiang Rai, Mae Sai or Chiang Khong. Acting as a border post with Laos, on the opposite bank of the Mekong, 6 km away is Sop Ruak and its opium museum. Chiang Saen is also the former capital of the Thai kingdom of Yonok. Among the many barges from China, ferries shuttle goods. Chiang Saen also boasts a number of ancient temples, which have been restored or are in the process of being restored.
