Phayao lies halfway between Chiang Rai and Nan. This small, unspoilt town is often overlooked by visitors, yet it boasts a number of interesting sites in the surrounding area. Phayao is built around a large artificial lake that covered the valley after the construction of a dam. Here you'll find the town's emblem: two nagas seemingly rising from the water, facing the large esplanade where the Pho Khun Ngam Muang monument stands. Built on the site of an ancient temple important to the locals, Wat Tilak Aram is located on the lake and is reached by boat (B30 per person).
