Only 25 km southeast of Chiang Mai, this small, pleasant town of 12,200 people, bordering the Kuang River, is offered by most Chiang Mai tour operators. It is also easy to get there on your own: by shared taxi or motorbike. The railway station is a bit out of the center. The main point of interest is Wat Phra That Hari Phunchai. There are several other richly decorated temples. The village is peaceful and one can still see the vestiges of the old fortifications. However, it is not a must-see destination especially if your time is limited.
