In Piton-Sainte-Rose, one building is worth a visit: the Notre-Dame-des-Laves church, on the edge of the RN2, which was spared from lava in 1977. The lava flow, resulting from an eruption outside the enclosure (the first since 1800), descended at a rapid rate on April 8, and the authorities decided to evacuate the 2,500 inhabitants. A first wave of lava, 500 m wide, engulfed a dozen houses as well as the gendarmerie. Two days later, another flow of lava fell at 80 km/h towards Piton-Sainte-Rose, passed through the village and, miracle or chance, stopped dead in front of the church door. That's how much devotion she now enjoys..
