Lendava, long assimilated into the kingdom of Hungary, joined the Yugoslav bosom at the end of the Second World War. The Hungarian minority was quickly integrated. The city has always been cosmopolitan. Its large Jewish community attested to this until the middle of the 20th century. Today, the city has considerably enriched its tourist offer, concentrated around its castle which belonged to the Esterházy family, its theatre designed by the architect Imre Makovecz, its synagogue now transformed into a Jewish cultural centre and its observation tower which offers a fabulous panorama of the three countries on the eastern borders.
