In the early 13th century, Frederick I of Pettau (Ptuj) ceded the hill and surrounding area to the Teutonic Knights. A tower with a copy of the image of the Virgin of Jerusalem was erected. It attracted large numbers of pilgrims and the name Jeruzalem was given to the site. There was no shortage of battles around the hill. A company of Turkish soldiers on their way back from the Battle of St. Gotthard in 1664 was wiped out by women. Forty years later, it was the priest and his parishioners who fought victoriously against the Hungarian hordes. Today, it's a place of rare tranquility and unrivalled craftsmanship.
