The birthplace of the ethnologist József Kossics, Bogojina is first mentioned in 1208. It has had a tumultuous past due to the incessant Ottoman assaults that long endangered its cultural heritage. A true spearhead of the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century, it was finally integrated into the Catholic sphere of influence in 1669, not without difficulty. Today, the village of 400 inhabitants has clearly lost some of its splendour and vitality. Nevertheless, if you pass through the area, a detour to the charming Church of the Ascension is a must to admire the famous renovation work carried out by the inevitable Jože Plečnik.
