Some 24,000 inhabitants. The town, which gained its rights in the mid-14th century, grew up around its castle. The first building, mentioned in 1249, was replaced in the 16th century by the imposing Renaissance-style fortress with its circular defense towers. The town's original name, Civitas rein, sheds light on its geographical location, as it refers to the banks of a river. South of Brežiže, the Krka flows into the Sava. The castle and museum's magnificent Knights' Hall, the largest Baroque hall in the country, remains a major attraction. Its natural heritage is also rich in caves and sinkholes.
