With a population of 56,000, Kranj is the largest town in Upper Carniola (Gorenjska). It is built on a strategic promontory, a rocky ridge at the confluence of the Kokra and Save rivers. At the foot of the Kamnik and Savinja Alps, Kranj is a bustling weekday town. The country's fourth-largest city, it now suffers from its proximity to the capital. Kranj has recently embraced the cultural card, calling itself the town of Prešeren (the eminent poet lived here for only the last three years of his life) and showcasing its attractive pedestrianized town center.France Prešeren is buried in a grove named after him, Prešernov Gaj. The memorial dates back to 1852. Follow Gregorčičeva Ulica past Maistrov Trg to get there.
