This small key of 2 hectares was first the island where the workers who built the extension of the railroad to Key West, the famous Old Seven Mile Bridge, resided. During World War II, the island became a training camp for G.I.'s and Marines. It is now home to the Pigeon Key and Marine Science Center, a charitable organization that works to preserve the environment (including running most of the infrastructure on solar power) and the history of the Key. You can get there by ferry or by crossing the Old Seven Mile Bridge-just reopened-on foot or by bike
