This nature reserve located on Cudjoe Key was established in 1938 to protect the great white heron. The sanctuary of about 80,000 ha is composed of about 100 small islands and mangrove swamps. It plays an important role in the protection of great white herons threatened with extinction due to the abuse of their feathers to make hats. Today, they can be easily observed, mainly at dawn and dusk. The only way to access this natural reserve is by boat! Tours leave from Sugarloaf Key on green boats designed to avoid damaging this fragile ecosystem.
