Looe Key is not an island but a coral reef located south of Big Pine Key. It was fatal to an English frigate, the HMS Looe, which sank there in 1744. The area is part of the National Marine Sanctuary Preservation Area, renowned for its deep, fishy waters - sharks, barracudas and rays can be found there - but also for the quality of its spear fishing. Various dive companies organize trips to this reef: divers and snorkelers have a great time in what is considered the most spectacular living reef in North America.
