With a population of just over 4,000, Sugarloaf Key is the only island in the Keys that forms a U-shape on the Atlantic, as if it were two islands in some way. This is why it is geographically divided in two with Lower Sugarloaf Key on one side and Upper Sugarloaf Key on the other. For the record, the Key owes its strange name to a variety of pineapple, the Sugarloaf, which grew on the island in pre-Columbian times. Sugarloaf Key is home to other local species such as the poison tree whose sap is poisonous. It is from Sugarloaf Key that you can discover the Great Heron National Wildlife Refuge.
