The Key West Nature Reserve has existed since 1908 and covers nearly 80,000 hectares. It is home to about 250 species of birds and plays an important role in the reproduction of sea turtles. This sanctuary consists of waterways and mangrove islands. The whole area is considered a "federal wilderness area". However, most of the areas are open to boating and the only way to access this reserve is by boat! Several agencies offer catamaran excursions from Key West. Once in the area, you can travel by kayak on the mangrove waterways
