This fortified town lies on a hill overlooking the sea, 90 km north of Rome. Tarquinia owes its fame to the Etruscan necropolis discovered nearby. Founded around the 13th century BC, Tarquinia was a very powerful Etruscan city before falling under Roman control in the 4th century BC. The town was abandoned by its inhabitants in the 7th century during the Lombard invasions. It was rebuilt on its present site and became an important medieval center. Today, you can still lose yourself in its medieval alleys and stroll through its squares, surrounded by palaces and churches.
