Until 1923, the city was known as Heydekrug and belonged to Germany. There will be a monument commemorating the annexation of the region to Lithuania, the Evangelical Church of 1926 and the Catholic church of 1850. The city is the gateway to the magnificent delta delta (Nemuno delta) where the river flows into the sea after almost 1 000 km from its source in Belarus. In winter, delta water freezes exposing its inhabitants to very difficult living conditions. The boat is the main means of locomotion in the region and is essential from March to mid-May when spring floods overwhelm much of the territory. It is by boat that the delta is best explored. Most hotels rent boats with a boatmasters guide. For excursions to the delta, consult the tourist office and the park office.
