Located 50 km from Smiltynė and 4 km from the Russian border, Nida is the main seaside resort on the Neringa peninsula. Originally a fishing village with pretty wooden houses and a small harbour crowded with boats, it became a tourist centre from the late 19th century, when it was still Prussian. Many artists came to seek inspiration in its natural and peaceful setting. In the 1930s, for example, Nida was a refuge for the German writer Thomas Mann, and Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir also stayed here. The tourist centre is located at its southern end, around the harbour. Nida has a population of 2,000, which increases significantly during the summer. However, the place remains calm, peaceful and retains the charm of yesteryear. The landscape is breathtaking.
