30 km south of Telšiai, the small village of Varniai, the former seat of the Samogitian Bishopric, founded in 1421 by Grand Duke Vytautas, is at the heart of the 33,800-hectare regional park. The diocese was created to mark the conversion of the entire country to Catholicism. Since then, Varniai has been one of the main centres of Lithuanian culture.It can be reached from Telšiai, many buses make the journey in 45 minutes.
