The successor to the former Königsberg, Kaliningrad is a Soviet city of concrete towers and wide avenues. Nevertheless, some elements of the Prussian era have been preserved in the old centre, such as the Royal Gate and the cathedral, which houses the tomb of Immanuel Kant. Russia still has a complicated relationship with the city's Germanic past, but it benefits from the tourism spin-off. It should not be forgotten that this is Russia: on the one hand, the Orthodox Cathedral of the Holy Saviour is reminiscent of Moscow, while on the other, the military port, with its post-Soviet arsenal, keeps a watchful eye.
