This lively town of 20,700 inhabitants boasts long white sandy beaches. But it's also a fishing port, a city of art and a shopping center, with canvases stretched over certain pedestrian streets to shelter from the sun. Today, it still inspires many painters who settle here to appreciate its ever-changing light. A number of ferries run between Ayamonte and Vila Real de Santo António in Portugal, departing every 30 to 40 minutes, which can be a pleasant way to reach Portugal or to enjoy a delightful ride on the Guadiana River.
