A stopover in Castro Marim is essential, at least to visit the castle. Set on a hill overlooking the marshy lowlands of the Guadiana, it occupies a strong position facing the Spanish town of Ayamonte. The village has existed since Roman times, but it was not until the 14th century that it really took off. In 1321, when the Templar order was dissolved in Portugal, it became the headquarters of the Knights of Christ, before being transferred to Tomar in 1334. Locals claim that the salt produced here is the best in the country, if not Europe. Don't hesitate to venture out along the marshes to discover how salt is extracted.
