Kuching is the capital of the state of Sarawak. Situated on the banks of the Sungai Sarawak River, the city is home to some 660,000 inhabitants, more than a quarter of the state's population. It is a subtle blend of Malay, Chinese, Dayak and Indian, creating a mosaic of cultures not found elsewhere in Borneo. Despite its size and ever-expanding suburbs, Kuching retains a village atmosphere surrounded by lush natural surroundings. Kuching means "cat" in Malay, but the origin of this name remains obscure. References to cats, such as the Cat Museum or the city's many cat statues, are mostly part of a tourism policy. The town has an undeniable charm and has preserved its identity, of which the inhabitants are very proud. It's not uncommon for travellers to extend their stay in Kuching to relax, stroll along the river, stroll through Chinatown, get lost in the old quarters and enjoy the indefinable atmosphere. It's also a great base for organizing excursions to the surrounding parks or discovering longhouse life, the traditional Iban habitat.
