Strategically perched at the top of a hill, Fort Margherita was built in 1879 to protect the city from potential pirate attacks. The fort was named Margherita in honour of Margaret, the wife of Charles Brooke, the second white Rajah. The deterrent effect of the fort was visibly effective since it was never the scene of fighting. In 2016, the Brooke Gallery was inaugurated. The museum traces the history of Sarawak under the 100-year reign of the white Rajahs.
