Saroaku is a sparsely populated mining town, extracting almost 10% of the world's nickel production. PT Inco controls and manages everything in the region, which is surrounded by thick, mountainous rainforest. The "expat village" offers every modern comfort, and even a private airline. The Indonesian village, on the other hand, revolves around the market, wooden huts covered in corrugated iron. Life revolves around the mine during the day, and the girls at night. The sight of a multinational company stranded at the end of the world doesn't exactly suggest nirvana, yet nearby are two superb lakes: Matana and Towuti.
