The small town of Qatzrin, with a population of 7,000, is the economic and administrative capital of the Golan Heights. Originally designed to accommodate 25,000 inhabitants, the town was founded in 1977 and built in the shape of a butterfly, the body being the administrative and commercial center and the wings the first part of the residential neighborhoods. Nevertheless, Qatzrin never really took off as its founders had hoped, and the originality of the project can only be appreciated from the air. The town may not be very pretty, but it is surrounded by magnificent nature reserves and wineries, notably in the Kidmat Tsvi moshav, a few km to the north.
