In 1948, when the State of Israel was founded, Acre (Akko in Hebrew, Akka in Arabic) was incorporated into the territory of the young state. A new town was built alongside the old Arab town, while excavations began on the ancient Crusader city. Predominantly inhabited by Jews, these new districts are of little tourist interest. On the other hand, the old town, which is still mostly inhabited by Arabs, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Worth a day trip: the Citadel, the beautiful mosque, the hammam, the souk, the lighthouse and the fishing port.
