You will reach Deir el-Qamar, «the moon of the moon», after 16 km of the Damour coastline. This charming small village is located at 860 m above sea level. Its beautiful stone houses and red roof roofs are facing the palace of Beiteddine. Deir el-Qamar has ten churches: Seven Maronites, two Greek Catholics and one Orthodox, as well as a mosque dating from the th century and a synagogue closed for years. The origin of the commune seems to go back to the Phoenician era. The inhabitants then met the moon and erected a temple. The village church, called Saïdet-el-Tallé (Notre-Dame-de-la-Colline), was built on the site of this temple. The Arab name at Deir el-Qamar was assigned to it in the th century. During the period of the emirate of Mount-Lebanon, Deir el-Qamar was chosen as capital, and governors Ma'an then raised their palaces around the magnificent village square (midan).A walk in the steep streets of Deir el-Qamar will allow you to discover different examples of traditional Lebanese architecture. The village was classified as 1945 by the Lebanese Government in the historical monuments inventory. Today, the municipality of Deir el-Qamar is committed to safeguarding its heritage and follows in the letter a planning plan (it is one of the few municipalities to do so in Lebanon).
