The famous pirate Cofresi gave his name to the locality in which he is said to be buried. It's a small, cove-shaped village with a beach lined with coconut palms, 5 km west of Puerto Plata. The view over the bay is superb. Unfortunately, the sea here is not impeccably clean, not least because of the small drink and sandwich stalls that invade Cofresi beach, which is very lively and mainly frequented by Dominicans. If you're looking for absolute peace and quiet, you can rent apartments or houses here for longer stays, as prices are particularly competitive.
