45 km from Puerto Plata. Luperón owes its name to the hero of the Restoration War, the mestizo general Gregorio Luperón who was president of the Republic in 1880. The road from Puerto Plata is beautiful. The village with Victorian architecture, whose port is nestled at the bottom of a deep bay sheltered by a maze of mangroves, was the scene of a landing of patriots who took up arms against the Trujillo dictatorship in 1959. The group of nine men who came from Cuba landed in Estero Hondo and on the beach of Maimón to launch a guerrilla war against the dictator's regime. The fishermen will appreciate its waters full of fish.
