Cotuí is one of the island's oldest cities. It was founded in 1505 by Rodrigo Díaz de Trujillo, and was then called Las Minas because of the open-pit zinc, copper, silver and gold mines quickly exploited by settlers. The region is also the country's rice reserve. Stark silhouettes of rice silos dot the landscape. Rice paddies spread their green fields along the roads.Cotuí is a pretty, lively and prosperous little town. You'll enter under a glorious canopy of flamboyant trees and, not to be outdone, you'll find the park in the center of town, flanked by its white church.
