Barahona's history dates back to pre-Columbian times, when the region belonged to the Taino chiefdom of Jaragua. When settlers moved in, they named the town Barahona to mark their new reign. After independence, the town became a military post, then the headquarters of the Cuban revolutionary movement El Salvador. Today, the charming town bears witness to this complex heritage and lies at the heart of a fabulous region, home to marvellous landscapes and the country's most precious stone: Larimar. You can get there by bus from Santo Domingo with Caribe Tours for $450 (caribetours.com.do).
