In the extreme south-west of the country, on the edge of the Haitian border, Jaragua National Park is the ideal place for ecotourism off the beaten track (beware of dangerous roads!). The park is rich in pre-Columbian archaeological sites, the oldest dating back to 2590 BC. Fauna is also abundant, with over 130 species of birds (including 10 endemic species) and a rare reserve of solenodonts and jutías, two threatened terrestrial species. To make the most of this natural treasure, it's best to go with an authorized guide, otherwise you risk missing out on the Laguna de Oviedo and the Bahía de Las Águilas.
