Jimani is a border post. A few kilometers from the center are customs and the duty-free market which, like its northern twin Dajabon, takes place on Mondays and Thursdays. The bustle resembles that of Haiti, with traffic and haggling over Haitian rum, Barbancourt, for example. Since the 2010 earthquake, this border has become busier and the atmosphere is tense, agitated, muddy and dusty. Humanitarian convoys flock here, tap-taps (Haitian trucks painted with brightly coloured, naive scenes and packed with goods) are legion, the road is bad, and scams are a regular occurrence.
