Sainte-Marie became an independent commune in 1789. Today, the urbanization is continuous with the chief town, so much the latter has spread eastward. Les Hauts, criss-crossed by several gullies, offers beautiful excursions: you can walk along the edge of the basins up to the catchment area of the arm of Sainte-Marie where you can explore the plain of the Fougères. Sainte-Marie remains a practical and pleasant town for those who want to discover Saint-Denis. Each district has its assets: the seafront is pedestrian and cycling, ideal for admiring the sunset, while the Rivière des Pluies district is known for its Black Madonna and its huts.
