This peaceful town of 11,000 inhabitants founded in 1894 takes its name from the oars for the canoes that were made at the time from the woods of the coastal gullies. A peaceful commune, it lies between the West and the South, under the influence of two large towns, Saint-Leu and Saint-Louis, without being a crossroads, as it is away from both the national highway and the Tamarind road. It is even rather neglected by tourists, despite its beautiful attractions, including in particular the Tévelave forest and the superb forest road that joins the Maïdo. This peaceful region between West and South is that of the forests.
