GERLAND PARK
Read moreLess known than that of the Tête d'Or or that of Parilly, the park of Gerland is yet a green lung between the banks of the Rhone and the facilities of the Matmut Stadium. In the south of the city, this park is also called Confluent Park, offering natural continuity to the banks of the Rhone, or even privileged access to the Confluences Museum. Created by the landscape architect Michel Corajoud and inaugurated in 2000, this 18 hectare park occupies a former industrial site which has been preserved a building to house the Maison des Fleurs where you can discover all the natural interest of the famous Megaphorbiaie, the park's garden-promenade composed of 18,000 plans of 300 different species, water lilies, trees and vast lawns. A park naturally focused on sports activities: children's games, skate parks indoor and outdoor, carousel… You can also see many ducks in the canals or an astonishing chromatic garden that lights up in the evening.

To be continued.

NATIONAL MEMORIAL OF THE MONTLUC PRISON
Read moreAn edifying visit to pass on the memory to the young, hoping that barbarism will never return. Built in 1939, a few months after the declaration of war with Nazi Germany, requisitioned by the German army from February 1943 to August 1944, the Montluc prison is part of the Nazi repressive system in the heart of the "Capital of the Resistance". Under the control of the terrible Gestapo and Klaus Barbie, it was the place of detention of Jean Moulin, André Frossard, the children of Izieu and many Jewish families. Montluc was the prison of more than 10,000 victims of the Third Reich authorities. Resistance fighters, Jews, civilians, all knew the harshness of the conditions of detention. Montluc was often only a stage in the journey towards deportation and often extermination. The prison closed its doors for good in 2009. Montluc is not a museum, but a place of memory. Since January 2022, the building, which has remained close to its original state, has been restored and rehabilitated to better welcome visitors, particularly for accessibility, and to give an account to all audiences of a history that must not be forgotten. The work, planned until 2025, does not currently allow a complete visit of the prison, including the outer courtyards and some parts of the building visible at different times. A visit strongly recommended.
ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST PRIMATIAL CHURCH
Read morePrimatial of the Gauls, home of the Church of France, the Saint-Jean-Baptiste-Saint-Etienne cathedral is located on the banks of the Saône, facing the Fourvière hill, in the district to which it gave its name: Saint-Jean. The first Christians, gathered in the 2nd century around Saint Pothin and Saint Irenaeus, had built a church in the same area as early as the5th century. At the end of the 11th century, the construction of the Manécanterie, one of the oldest buildings in Lyon, began. The construction of the cathedral is done in stages between 1165 and 1481. In the meantime, the cathedral hosted two councils (1245 and 1274) and the coronation of Pope John XXII (1316). With its Romanesque choir and Gothic naves, the cathedral shows how Lyon is at the crossroads, at the center of all influences. If the interior is remarkable, so is the facade, decorated with a series of 300 medallions inspired by the Old and New Testaments or the medieval bestiary. In 1379, an astronomical clock was installed in the cathedral, one of the oldest in Europe. At the beginning of the 16th century, the Bourbon chapel was built in the flamboyant gothic style. On December 13, 1600, the cathedral received the marriage of Henri IV and Marie de Médicis. The facade was renovated in 1982 and 2011, while major restoration work of the choir was implemented to restore all its brilliance to this jewel of Lyon.

JEAN COUTY MUSEUM
Read moreFacing the Ile Barbe, in a sumptuous natural setting, Charles Couty has opened a museum dedicated to the work of his father, the painter Jean Couty (1907-1991) - winner of the Paris Critics' Prize in 1950 and the Grand Prix des Peintres Témointres de leur Temps in 1975 - but also to modern and contemporary art. A place out of the ordinary by the beauty of the site, the architectural beauty of the building and by the collections that one discovers there. Jean Couty, a figurative painter who loved to paint Lyon - but also the landscapes from here and elsewhere, the Romanesque churches -, gives us his vision of the city, the women and men he met there. A total of 150 works, including 120 paintings, are on display with sketches, drawings and other objects familiar to the artist. The hangings allow visitors to come back regularly to discover new works, such as these "Landscapes from here and elsewhere". It's a great idea to highlight a Lyon artist who left his mark on his time: a museum that catches the eye and pleases the mind.

METALLIC TOWER OF FOURVIÈRE
Read moreBecause very few Lyon inhabitants know the true story of this tower, a must-visit in the landscape, Futé is proud to present it like a curiosity in this guide. This Lyon Eiffel Tower, making passing Parisians laugh, was opened to public on 3rd May, 1894. Its construction was decided by a group of craftsmen supported by the city, opposite to Fourvière, to... put the Basilica in a republican shade! Indeed, since its construction, Fourvière is not the highest point in Lyon anymore and it is this republican tower that dominates the city at an altitude of 372 m. Formerly, it hosted a restaurant and a belfry from where people could enjoy the view. The tower is sold in 1953 to the ORTF, in order to not demolish it. Since then inaccessible to the public, it supports now transmitters and continue on scoffing at Fourvière.
