A museum dedicated to Tony Garnier, where you can see Lyon and its architecture in a different light, with exhibitions on architecture.
A different kind of museum to see the city and its architecture differently. To quote a famous slogan: "If you don't know Tony Garnier, you're not from Lyon". Indeed, this visionary architect and urban planner of the "hygienist" and humanist movement made a major contribution to the construction of the United States district in the 1920s and 1930s, working alongside mayor and builder Edouard Herriot. Tony Garnier built a "Habitations à Bon Marché" housing estate, the precursor of the famous HLM (low-cost housing).
This museum, part of the Only Lyon tour and part of the World Decade for Cultural Development, was created by local residents, who came together in an association to pay tribute to Tony Garnier's work. The museum offers several facets to discover: an open-air tour of the Cité Tony Garnier, adorned with famous murals depicting the town planner's works or the "ideal city" as seen by other artists, all accompanied by a guide or a tour guide in several languages (booklet); a visit to a show apartment, a realistic reconstruction of a modern dwelling from the 1930s; a visit to the museum itself, which houses temporary exhibitions devoted to architecture and town planning, as well as a store offering a selection of books and products. A visit accessible to all.
The painted walls and the outdoor areas are interesting, as the model apartment of the 1950s.
