To the south of Grenoble Alpes Métropole, the commune of Vif - which owes its strange name to the Romans, who made it a stopover town(vicus) on the road between Grenoble and Fréjus - owes its industrial boom to the "grey gold" of cement factories in the 19th century. Vif has remained a country town, preserving a very pleasant living environment. The town has a particularly interesting heritage, with the Saint-Jean-Baptiste church and its mural paintings, the Sainte-Marie du Genevrey church, and the Champollion family estate, the Domaine des Ombrages, now the Champollion Museum run by the Isère department (free admission).
