L'Isle-d'Abeau is a transit area between Bourgoin and Lyon and has developed over the years. To the traditions of weaving and silkworm breeding, especially present in the 19th century, or the extraction of rock, respond tertiary activities and those related to the administration of the New City. The latter was created in 1972 following the development plan of the Lyon-Saint-Etienne-Grenoble metropolis. In 1983, the Rocard law modified the status of the new towns: 16 communes left the project, the 5 remaining communes formed the Syndicat d'Agglomération Nouvelle (SAN). The communes belong to the Communauté d'Agglomération Porte de l'Isère.
