The town of Chirens occupies a flat alluvial area surrounded by hills on almost all sides except to the southeast and northeast. Castral mounds were built on the hills of Chirens in the 11th century perhaps by the inhabitants of Colletière (see above). The village is first mentioned in a document dated 1330 as Villa Nova Di Chiroyen. "Chi" would mean narrow, constricted and "ren": watercourse. The name of Chirens could also go back to the Lower Empire and be derived from the Germanic patronymic "Caro".
