Les Neyrolles (600 inhabitants) is located on the eastern outskirts of Nantua. Two classified sites are on its territory: the spring of the Doye, exploited by the Cristaline company, and the lake of Sylans, which supplies the said spring by infiltrations. In 1865, a local café owner, Joachim Moinat, had the idea of making commercial use of the ice that formed on the lake in winter. From 1875 to 1880, his business expanded to produce nearly 300,000 tons of ice annually. This was enough to supply large cities such as Paris, Lyon, Marseille and later Algiers by road and then by rail.
