A border town, Ferney-Voltaire is associated with the Greater Geneva area. Originally called Ferney, the town owes its urban plan and its name to its eminent philosopher, François-Marie Arouet, known as Voltaire. A neighbor of Geneva, Voltaire chose Ferney as a place of refuge, where he spent the last 20 years of his life, becoming its benefactor. Although it has few attractions beyond its château and park, Ferney is notable for its cultural dynamism, culminating in the famous Fête à Voltaire held every year on the last weekend in June.
