The village of Magnac-Lavalette-Vilars is home to an architectural treasure: the Château de la Mercerie, a small "Charentais Versailles". There is nothing old behind this 200 m long facade, since the whole dates from the 20th century and is the result of the folly of two brothers, who wanted to treat themselves to a replica of the palaces of Louis XIV. Their ruin led to the project being closed before it was completed, but the visit is still worthwhile, both for the architecture of the complex and for the mahogany gallery or the azulejos decorations.
