Situated between Bapaume and Péronne, on an essential road for the Germans, Rancourt found itself at the heart of important fighting during the Battle of the Somme. The town was retaken by the French army on 25 September 1916. Although the necropolis is only a few hundred metres from the village, it is on the territory of Bouchavesnes-Bergen.The chapel serves as a memorial to the French dead of the Battle of the Somme. The two cemeteries, English (96 bodies) and German (11,422 bodies), which are on the other side of the road, together with the necropolis and the chapel, form the memorial site of Rancourt-Bouchavesnes.
