Portet-en-Béarn is notorious for its July 3, 1944. On that day, the Nazi army entered the village and completely destroyed it, setting houses on fire, killing civilians and carrying out bloody reprisals against the French resistance fighters. Today, this date is still commemorated. On the commune site, excavations have highlighted the existence of a protohistoric camp. In addition, as for many villages in this part of the department, ruins of 12th, 13th and 14th century fortifications have been uncovered. This complex, known as the Justice or Moutha, includes a clod, a low courtyard and a ditch. Part of the St. Lawrence Church dates back to the 17th century (1682). It contains furniture, paintings, glass roofs and objects included in the general inventory of cultural heritage. Finally, the largest residence, Château Lavielle, was a secular abbey.
