About fifteen kilometres north of Le Mans, the commune of Ballon, newly called Ballon-Saint Mars, overlooks the valley of the Orne Saosnoise. It is a must to stop and admire this fabulous view and to contemplate the keep Classified as a Historic Monument in 1923, it overlooks the surrounding area and was intended to be a defence gateway to Maine. In the 11th century, this place was disputed between Normans, Manceaux and lords of Ballon. Taken by the English, taken back by Philippe Auguste and then razed to the ground, all that remains is the 15th century keep and its 16th century drawbridge gate. From up there, the panoramic view is exceptional
