Villeneuve-en-Retz is a new commune (2016) born from the merger of the towns of Bourgneuf-en-Retz, Fresnay-en-Retz and Saint-Cyr-en-Retz. This is a logical grouping since the history of these villages has long been linked to their maritime heritage, their proximity to the sea, the Bay of Bourgneuf and the ancient Gulf of Machecoul, now covered by the Marais Breton. It is from the 11th century that Bougneuf-en-Retz knows an important development thanks to the exploitation and the marketing of salt throughout Europe well before Guérande and Noirmoutier.
