It is located in the north-east of the Vendée, facing the island of Noirmoutier, which was accessed by the Gois, a 4.2 km long submersible causeway in the Bay of Bourgneuf, before the bridge was built in 1971. The town is located at the tip of a rocky spur that separates the Marais Breton Nord into two. A Roman silo attests to an occupation from the Gallo-Roman period. Among the sites not to be missed: the unique and unavoidable passage of the Gois, whose first known crossing dates back to around 843 AD, the salt marshes, the adorable port of Le Bec and the oyster life that takes place there all year round, the 19th century church of Saint-Philbert.
