Fontenoy-le-Château lives to the rhythm of the pleasure boats that call at its port (Canal de l'Est). It is the department's leading marina. Fontenoy-le-Château was once a fortified town, seat of a seigniorial provostry and a county, and played a key role in the conquests of Charles le Téméraire. Testimony to this glorious past are the Tour des Lombards and the Church of Saint-Mansuy (15th and 17th centuries). The poet Gilbert was born here and France's first baccalaureate graduate, Julie-Victoire Daubié, died here. The "Fête de l'Écrit" reflects the village's commitment to promoting the written word, with visiting authors, dictation competitions and literary prize-giving events.
